INVESTIGATION IN A DIGITAL AGE

Investigators have always been involved in an information
gathering business.  Today, technology has changed the
way information assets are stored and managed.  These
changes effect the way that information can be accessed
and the manner in which information needs be preserved.
Critical information, once found in file cabinets, ledgers,
journals, or other "hard copy" formats are now more
commonly located on computer workstations and peripheral
media storage devices.

COMPUTER INVESTIGATION

Care must be taken in the identification and preservation of
information stored in digital form.  The proper techniques
for identification and investigation of digital memory devices
require special training and tools to conduct successful
computer-related investigations.  Since virtually any type of
investigation can involve the use of information stored on a
personal computer or office workstation, an experienced
investigator with the necessary computer skill set is an
important component in civil, criminal, and administrative
investigations.

forensic services in cases involving allegations of fraud,
deliberate destruction of information assets, violation of
acceptable use & other policy / regulatory issues, and theft
of trade secrets.  Hawaii Digital Analysis has been tasked to
assist in e-discovery matters and has also provided
services to business by confirming the deletion of
information required by policy.  Hawaii Digital Analysis has
performed document recovery services to restore critical
data.

COMPUTER-ASSISTED ANALYSIS AND PRESENTATION

Hawaii Digital Analysis  specializes in the analysis and
integration of documentary material, financial data and
testimony from a variety of sources for reporting and
presentation of investigative findings in a variety of formats.
Complex issues in litigation often create a document
"crunch."   The same is true for the results of a computer
forensic examination that yields the recovery of thousands
of potentially useful files.  The challenge for investigators
under such conditions is to employ methods to identify key
material that demonstrates the issues and the supporting
evidence obtained as the result of investigation.

Hawaii Digital Analysis has assisted in the creation of
charts, illustrations, relational diagrams, and time lines to
assist in communicating investigative information and for
court presentation.  In this way, facts gathered from varied
sources (such as witness testimony, telephone logs,
financial data, computer analysis, documentary material,
surveillance video, etc) can be integrated in a number of
formats to illustrate otherwise complex relationships,
transactions or events.
